Kurokasane-

Both the kanji characters ‘黒’ and ‘玄’ signify the colour black. However, the worlds they represent are different.
It is said that the character ‘黒’ originated from the image of smoke-blackened chimneys caused by soot rising from flames, with the lower part—the four dots forming the ‘fire’ radical—representing fire.
In comparison, the ‘幺’ component of ‘玄’ represents a twisted bundle of thread. It is an image of a horizontal bar placed across the top to suspend the bundle, and is said to depict ‘the process of dyeing white thread black’. If one were to look through the gaps in the hanging black threads at the world beyond, one might find a world that has been abstracted by the observer. The world of Chinese ink wash painting may well be this world of ‘玄’.
In other words, ‘black’ refers to the colour resulting from physical phenomena, whilst ‘玄’ is a black that encompasses the spiritual realm as well.
I believe that the black of lacquer is not ‘black’ but ‘玄’. I would be delighted if, through ‘玄襲’, the richness and profundity of the lacquer’s world of ‘玄’ could be conveyed.
