仏教用語で生きとし生けるものをいれるこの世界を「器界」と呼ぶ。

木地作りから塗りたて、あるいは蒔絵の磨き上げまで段取り通り入念に仕事をしていく、つまり人間が完全にコントロールするのが漆芸である。もちろん乾くのは漆自身の力であり、季節の温度や湿度によって乾き方や艶は影響を受けるのだが、どれも微細な変化である。そこに何らかの人間の手の届かない要素を加えたいと考え、数学を用いた作品である。
自然界に存在する関数を軸として用いつつ、最終的には人間(私)の感覚でもって再構築し作品として仕上げている。artという言葉のもつ「自然の模倣」「人為」という意味合いへと繋がってゆく。

種々の技法を用い、すべて漆の黒のヴァリエーションで仕上げた。漆という素材に拡大鏡的にアプローチすることで、漆黒の深さと豊かさが伝わるように。

世界を記述する一つの方法である数学の法則にのっとって12の器(0を含む)を重ねた。
0.1.1.2.3.5.8.13.21.34.までは同じ一本の欅の木から削りだされている。

In Buddhism, they call the current universe ‘Kikai(器界)’; a vessel containing all living forms.

The art of Shitsu-gei (the making of Urushi lacquer art) is an art of considerable care and precise control over each process beginning from carving the wood base to finishing with lacquer (Nuritate) or the final polish on gold and silver powder gild (Makie). Indeed, as Urushi sets by itself it is influenced by seasonal temperature and humidity changes, but overall the general outcome is more result of the craftsman’s care than nature’s serendipity.

The titles of this series are of mathematical functions found in nature. I mixed in mathematics with Urushi to add elements which are beyond us. I aim to convey the deepness and richness of black Urushi by focusing on fine detail. The pieces are finished in black Urushi with various techniques.

The title cues from the Fibonacci Sequence which manifests in myriad forms in nature. The work consists of twelve vessels (including 0) in a consecutive nesting fashion. The first ten vessels ( 0.1.1.2.3.5.8.13.21.34) is carved from a single zelcova trunk.

Technique: Kuro-roiromigaki (polished black lacquer), Shinnuri (black lacquer), Ishime-shiage (fine wrinkled finish), Urumiurushi-nuri (mixed vermillion/black lacquer), Shudame-urushinuri (vermillion lacquer with translucent overcoat)
